Through the cold and the darkness, a poor little girl wandered in the street, with bare feet and no scarf for her head. It was the last night of the year, New Year’s Eve, and it was terribly cold! It was snowing, and soon it would be dark. Tell this story to your children, so they have deep sympathy for poor people and understand how it’s like to live in poverty. Even so, the story implanted a feeling of deep sorrow in my heart because she never gets the chance to experience joy in her childhood life. The little girl had a happy ending as her sufferings finally come to an end and she was able to join her grandmother. The story of her life had touched my heart and I keep reading it to my children. I first read this story from’ A TREASURE OF FAIRY TALES ‘book. It has been adapted to various media including animated film, and a television musical. The story is about a dying child’s dreams and hope, and was first published in 1845 and in Dansk Folkekalender Denmark for 1846. The Little Match Girl ( Danish: Den Lille Pige med Svovlstikkerne, meaning “The little girl with the matchsticks”) is a short story by Danish poet and author Hans Christian Andersen.
